Phil went from a tough soldier to a scared-for-his-life prisoner of war. He remains confident and good-spirited on the raft. Despite not bearing any responsibility for the crash, Phil’s strong moral conscience makes him feel guilt for the dead crewmen (LitCharts, int.).
Symbolism, motifs, and characterisation are used in The Book Thief, and The Cellist of Sarajevo to explore the theme of courage. In The Book Thief, Zusak uses the setting of the Hubermann’s basement as a symbol for courage. The basement is below ground, highlighting the importance of ‘underground networks’ and secrecy, and the courage it took for these networks to occur. The Hubermanns’ risked everything by taking in Max and allowing him refuge in the basement, an action which could have resulted in their deaths. This mirrors the work resistance groups did, risking their lives to defy the regime.
Narwin, like the assistant principal suggested and get on with his life. However, he stood strong saying he was expressing his patriotism. People might say he was definite because Ms. Narwin was purposely giving him bad grades. Ms. Narwin said multiple times throughout the novel that Philip is bright and has potential and she even begs the assistant principal to not suspend him.

In the play Antigone by Sophocles, the characters frequently make use of these tools when attempting to persuade another character to conform to their beliefs and thoughts. Antigone tries to get her sister, Ismene, to help her in a crime that she believes is just. Haimon attempts to lessen Antigone’s sentence by lecturing his father about what it means to be a good leader, and the Chorus is just trying to help out anyone they can with wise words from a third party opinion.

The characters in a story. They are hard to bring to life, yet a story would be incomplete without them. I love to write, and I often don’t have troubles creating my characters. But what makes every character stand out is that special thing about each and every one of them. That’s one thing that I loved about “The Book Thief,” by Markus Zusak.
Pride can be one of man's strongest qualities. In Sophocles' play, Antigone, the Theme of pride becomes the cause for destruction for both Creon and Antigone in the play.. Creon's Pride blinds him to the injustice he commits against Antigone and the gods. Antigone's pride leaves her no choice but to be killed because of her beliefs. They Both automatically surrender to their own hubris and demonstrate how uncontrolled pride leads to personal downfalls and destruction in Antigone.

Growing as a Character Every event in our lives happens for a reason, whether it is to learn from our mistakes or to gain experience from them. In Markus Zusak's novel “The Book Thief,” Liesel Meminger uses her experiences with living in the 1940s to learn life lessons and experience first hand the many terrible things Hitler is doing to people around her. She learns how to deal with the many obstacles that are thrown at her. Liesel grows as a character by following her step-father’s footsteps in being a kind and generous person, going through childhood with her best friend Rudy, and being aware of what is going on around her by learning from Max.
Change is an inevitable aspect of life; however the most significant changes occur when an individual develops a sought after skill or learns imperative information. In the novel The Book Thief the novel’s main protagonist Liesel Meminger encounters numerous moments which help define her characterization as she grows as a character. Firstly one of Liesel’s most poignant moments occurs once she pieces together her vague past and during the same process discovers her reason for loathing Hitler.
