In the book "The things thy Carried" written by Tim Obrien we can see a story about solders at Vietnam War. The connections i will be talking about are "Woman in war" and "The loss of innicence". Tim Obrien shows us those connections through chapters as "Sweet heart of the song tra bong", "The Things they carries", "Love" and "Field trip". Usually i would think that a woman in war is always used as a passive character, however Tim Obrien changes the stereotipical view on the role off Woman in war and showed us how the troma of war can change your prespective to anything. Martha is the first fimake character in the book, she is Jimmy Cross's obsession. Her role is seems to be passive as she is not a character who is at war, she is more of a dream girl for Jimmy. She is a beautiful, sexual object is Jimmys dreams. Martha's real role is to keep Jimmy alive, he knows that she doesen't love him, he knows that she will never be with him or love him as much as he loves her but also he doesent want to admine it, he doesent want to know. He spends days dreaming about her, she was a distraction from war, a distraction of a scary reallyty that Jimmy didnt want to face. " He would sometimes taste the evelope flaps, knowing her tangue had been there. More than anything he wanted Martha to love him as he loved her, but the latters were mostly chatty, elusive on the matter of love." From this quote we can his love for Martha, the way he still had feelings at War , where you had to be focus on serviving and not making a space for love. Martha represents love, even through the fact that she never loved Jimmy Cross, his love for her keeped him alive, she helped him to go through the day. He imagined how one day after war they will be together, he carries her photograph< he carries it as a talisman, he wishes that he could go back in time and " Carry her up the stairs, tied her to the bed, and touched her knee all night long." She asked her father why he doesent write storys about love and the idea of her character is to show anoter prespectiv on the ide of war, she was a young woman but she also was only 10 years old kid In Obrien's story she cant find inocence or happiness or love. The love she would know. She was a very important woman for Obrien and the way he explaineed war to her is vert different in many ways. "The war was as remote to her as cavemen and dinasours". From this quote we can see that Tim Obrien knew that Kathleen was very far from the whole idea of war. He knew that her inocennce wont idea of war. He knew that her inoccents would not let her feel what he feeled about Vietnam but he tryed to by showing the world, offering a small piece of her fathers history. However Kathleen only seen the place as a randon only sees the place as a random field in Vietnam, she also did't like it " This whole war, she said ,why was everybody so mad at everybody else?" The only thing, she knows is how angry everybody was, how mad they had to be to kill somebody else. Obrien wanted his daughter to see what he had been through but she couldnt understand simply because she had never seen war with her own eyes.
