Rough and long are two words that can be used to describe the journeys of the pioneers. The pioneers faced several challenges during their time exploring in the wilderness. They had to manage the hunger of their animals or they would have been rendered useless and die. The pioneers had to be aware of their surroundings, as they may be injured or killed by the natural disasters that go on around them. But the three most vital attributes that the pioneers had to constantly check or have with them were food, clothing, and following Maslow’s Hierarchy of Human Needs. Firstly, the food was a major contributor to the pioneers’ survival and a deadly enemy if not regulated and rationed correctly. Food is a need for all living things that live on the Earth, but it must be balanced correctly, too much and the person could get sick, too little and they could die. The clothing pieces necessary for the pioneers’ travels varied from place to place. There were the pioneers that traveled the mountains, the prairies, the woodlands, and the coastal areas. A great deal of sources cite that the general clothing needed for these adventures was: 2 flannel shirts, open in the front, with buttons, 2 woolen undershirts, 2 pairs of thick cotton drawers, 4 pairs of woolen socks, 2 pairs of cotton socks, 4 handkerchiefs, 2 pairs of stout shoes (for footmen), 1 pair of boots (for horsemen), 1 pair of shoes (for horsemen), 3 towels, 1 poncho, and 1 broad brimmed hat of soft felt. The cotton was rather used for the prairie expeditions as it kept you less warm than the wool and dried easily after rainstorms on the prairie.
