The play Macbeth written by William Shakespeare opens with three witches. Their significance of their role is very clear. They interact with no one but Macbeth although Banquo can hear and see them. Witches back then were held to possess powers and were able to predict the future. The play is very dependent on the witches presence because they are what persue Macbeth’s actions and ambitions. They are also important because they play as symbols of evil, destiny, and desire. The scenes would have not happened without their presence. In the beginning, the witches planned on seeing Macbeth. The witches have gathered in thunder and lightning and move amongst the fog which makes them seem very mysterious to the audience. Macbeth would have not gained the ambitions he had if the witches were not in the play. His ambition led him into desire which destroyed him. His responsibilities was promoted through by their forces Also without the witches Lady Macbeth would not have had the desire to help her husband rise to be king, “ you spirits that tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here, and fill me from the crown to the toe top-full” (1.5.38-41). The witches are responsible for influencing Macbeth to commit many murders.They convinced him to kill the the old king. They also persuaded him to kill Macduff’s family by creating many visions. One vision was of a bloody child telling him he has nothing to worry about, “none of woman born shall harm Macbeth”(4.1.96-97). Each time Macbeth is very hesitant. Without the witches fooling him he would have not committed any of the murders. In conclusion, the witches played a huge role throughout the play. Without their presence most of the events would have never happened. They are the main causes for Macbeth’s ambitions and actions. Their evilness and desire is what fooled
