The article The Time Has Come to Create Meaning-Making Centers on CollegeCampuses by Robert J. Nash and Jennifer J. J. Jang makes the argument that it’sextremely important for colleges to guide the development of meaning in students’’and to give their lives depth. The authors write about how it’s paramount to have asolid understanding of the world and one’s life in the tumultuous times of college.They write that years are marked with love, loss, happiness, death, success, failureand many more formative events, but without a strong meaning of one’s life, it’seasy to be tricked into believing that there is no bright side to life, especially whenthe bad events occur.I think that the authors made some valid points. While I understand theimportance of providing every kid an equal education, I think that it is equallyimportant to develop students’ creativity, imagination and love for independentlearning. Shortly after that sentence on page eight, the authors also write “We wantto whistle a little more, make funny faces often, laugh out loud a lot, find the humorand ironies in everyday life, and, above all, dance and sing along the way.” I smiledwidely and felt wholeheartedly happy at this sentiment. I feel that if everyone tookthemselves a little less seriously and took time out of the day to show a little morelove and compassion, that the world would be a much happier and healthier place.Everyone would be sending out good vibes everywhere and feeling them in return.From this article I learnt that it’s an important time for colleges to look at what they provide for their students and re-evaluate the key purposes of aneducation. Although a scholastic education will always be the main component of the college experience, an argument could be made that helping students make meaning out of their lives is equally important and necessary if the students are to live wholesome and fulfilled lives after
