Many stock exchanges exist throughout the world. The Toronto Stock Exchange, or the TSX ranks 9th in the world by market cap. Located in the heart of Toronto on King Street, the TSX is home to 3,985 companies between the TSX and the TSXV. The Toronto Stock Exchange Venture Exchange or TSXV is for companies with net asset value less than 7.5 million. TMX owns both of these exchanges and Canada’s first stock exchange, the Montreal Stock Exchange. Traditionally, buyers and sellers come together to trade and buy stock during certain hours of the day. However, the TSX trading floor was eliminated in 1997 and moved to a completely electronic format. There are many options for both local and foreign investors. Energy companies consist of non-renewable and renewable energy sources. Today, the TSX and TSXV has more oil and gas companies than any other exchange in the world. Hydro, wind and solar energy can also be found listed on the TSX. Suncor Energy is one of these companies. Suncor is considered a secondary industry company as Suncor specializes in upgraded crude oil. Suncor takes the primary industry’s product of extra heavy oil that, in this case, is mined in the oil sands of Alberta. Once Suncor has obtained the raw material it is then shipped to oil refineries to be processed into a transportable form, creating an upgraded crude oil. This process adds a layer of value to the initial raw material. Other energy companies include Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan, Barrick Gold and Pengrowth Energy. The financial companies listed in the TSX cover the tertiary or service sector industry. Banks are prominent in the TSX. The Toronto Dominion, Scotiabank, and Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce can all be found on the TSX. These companies are a part of the tertiary industry because they provide banking services like financial advice, providing loans, and accounts to the public.
