The Tragedy of invisibility Two literary works that can be analyzed through a psychoanalytic lens are the play, “The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet” by William Shakespeare and the novel, ”Speak" by Laurie Halse Anderson. How could the lover girl and the quiet girl have so much in common? They both have feelings of not being listened to and feeling invisible. They make choices and those choices have conciquences. This highlights the societal expectations and pressures that were placed on women during that time period, where arranged marriages were the norm and women had little say in whom they were to marry. Deny thy father and refuse thy name; Or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love, And I’ll no longer be a Capulet.” from romeo and juliet written by William Shakespear (Act II, Scene II. 33-36) Juliet met Romeo at the party her family hosted after Romeo snuck in. After the Party, Juliet went outside onto her balcony where she pondered about wanting Romeo to appear because she fell in love at first glance and they made eye contact. She’s done with the Feud her and Romeo's parents have and she just wants to love whomever she chooses for her own happily ever after. Melinda tries to tell her mother about how she’s feeling but her mother brushes her off and doesn’t seem to care. “ I don’t have time for this, Melinda. If you’re sick, just stay home. I have a meeting in ten minutes” (p.3). Melinda emphasizes to her mother about how she has anxiety about her day at highschool and her mother doesn’t listen to what Melinda has to say and brushes it off. Not thinking for a second thought about trying to comfort her daughter. This can be a difference to When Lord Capulet started getting aggressive and angry when Juliet was trying to explain why she didn’t want to marry Paris, but Lord Capulet didn’t care and stopped her from speaking and yelled at her and brushed off what she was trying to
