The Tragedy of Julius Caesar was written by William Shakespeare. He has written other plays like Macbeth and Romeo and Juliet. Brutus was one of the conspirators who was a part of the assassination of Julius Caesar. A tragic hero is a person, usually of noble birth, who suffers a catastrophe. Tragic heroes also have a tragic flaw. Shakespeare’s tragic heroes have 5 elements. They have traditional elements, complexity, inner turmoil, focuses on choices rather than fate, the character’s problems and their outcomes. Brutus is one of these characters. Throughout the play, Brutus is conflicted about the assassination of Caesar. Caesar if Brutus’s friend and he does not want to kill him but he knows it is for the good of Rome. At first he hesitates to join the conspirators. This quote shows Brutus’s hesitation. “It must be by his death / I know no personal cause to spurn at him” (2. 1. 10-12). On the other side, Brutus understands that he has to do this for the good of Rome. “no personal animosity towards Caesar that motivates Brutus / only a regard for the general good” (Shavi 71). This quote shows that Brutus did what he did for honor and the good of Rome. “of violent murder on the basis of noble and unselfish motivation” (Simmons 62). Brutus was of noble birth and he had a tragic flaw, which was his honor. He suffered a catastrophe which was Caesar’s assassination. Brutus also had complexity, which Shakespeare liked to add to most of his characters.. He hesitated to join the conspirators at first, but he knew he had to for the good of Rome and its people. He also made three choices that greatly affected his life and the people around him. These choices were Brutus joining the conspirators, not killing Antony when they had the chance, and letting Antony speak at the funeral. These are the elements that make Brutus a tragic hero in The Tragedy of Julius
