The Tragedy of Romeo’s Death Why is it that the character of Romeo in William Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, died? Romeo is an intelligent, young, and handsome Montague, who falls in love with a Capulet, who is known as Juliet. He is a very emotional and sensitive person. Romeo loves very strongly and passionately, but is very impulsive with his decisions. He lets chance, or the “stars”, decide his fate, which is one of sadness and end. While Romeo’s death had many causes, the primary factors of it were Mercutio, Juliet Capulet, and Friar Lawrence. The first reason for Romeo’s death is his involvement in the altercation Mercutio has with Tybalt. When Tybalt and Mercutio are preparing to fight, Romeo and Benvolio attempt to stop the fight and give other options, but they persist and continue on. She goes to the Friar and tells him that she plans to kill herself, but in an attempt to stop her, he brings up the idea of the sleeping potion. Juliet said, “Unless thou tell me how I may prevent it./ If in thy wisdom thou canst give no help,/ Do thou but call my resolution wise,/ And with this knife I’ll help it presently./ God joined my heart and Romeo’s, thou our hands./ And ere this hand, by thee to Romeo sealed” (4.1.52-69). When Juliet hears about the idea, she almost forces Friar Lawrence to give her the potion; “Give me, give me! O, tell not me of fear!” (4.1.124). If she had thought about the entire situation and made a more thought out decision, she could've been alive and Romeo wouldn't have gotten the news of Juliet being “dead” from Balthazar. Without the news of her being “dead”, Romeo wouldn't have gone to the apothecary to get a potion of his own, which would later cause him to be with his love
