The Holocaust was a tragic event in world history that many denied even happened. Many questions come to mind when addressing the Holocaust. When did it occur? What exactly was the Holocaust? What was Hitler’s ultimate goal in launching World War II? What were the Nuremberg trials? Did Nazis plan to murder the Jews from the beginning of their regime? Even though, the Holocaust was a tragic event, there are still many questions left unanswered.
When did World War II occur? Research determines that World War II was “ sparked by Adolf Hitler’s invasion of Poland in 1939, the war would drag on for six deadly years until the final Allied defeat of both Nazi Germany and Japan in 1945” (World War II 1). The surprise attack of Poland took place at dawn on September ,1 1939. Shortly after Hitler invaded Poland, France and Great Britain declared war on Germany. The Soviet Union which had an alliance with Germany then occupied the eastern half of Poland. They then continued to annex Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and Finland. (Modern World History 491). Holocaust is a word of Greek origin meaning ‘sacrifice by fire.’” Also in World War II Nazi soldiers believed that Germans were racially superior. This made them believe that they must eliminate any threat, including the Jews, to the Aryans of Germany.
