Boston has changed throughout the years. From the years 1877-1920 Boston has changed drastically because of new technology and transportation changed. From using the telegraph to the first being created. From riding animals and walking far distances, railroads were created. Not only did technology and transportation help change Boston, but people helped changed Boston. Immigrants coming into Boston looking for jobs and spreading their culture helped transform Boston. New immigrants took up residence in the city’s immigrant quarters in the North, South, and West Ends and many early Irish settlers left. In the 1910s, new immigrant groups would move into places with fast growing industrial businesses. Male immigrants worked as day laborers on the streets, docks, and railroads. Railroads were created in the 19th Century. The railroad was the “engine” for economic growth and national unity in the U.S. Railroads played a large role in the development of the United States from the Industrial Revolution in the North-East (1810–1850) to the settlement of the West (1850–1890). A large number of short lines were built, but because of fast developing financial system based on Wall Street and oriented to railway bonds, the majority were made into 20 trunk lines by 1890. In April of 1877, a telephone line connected Boston and Somerville, Massachusetts. This was the first use of the telephone line. In 1880, Boston’s population increased to 362,839 due to many immigrants coming in and many people moving to Boston. In September of 1919, the Boston Police Strike happened. Instead of taking carriages or walking or riding on animals to go places, people could just hop on the train. When people wanted to go elsewhere they would walk or go by carriage that was pulled by animals but it would take days or months to get to one place to another. When the railroad was formed and people wanted to go to one place to another it took hours, minutes or shorter days. It was so much easier than traveling by walking because during the cold seasons there would be food shortages because plants don’t grow in the cold and animals would hibernate so they could not kill for
