“...the worldwide refugee population has increased by more than 10 million and is now 25.4 million.” (The Refugee Crisis) Refugees are people who flee from their country in search of a safer place to live due to war, danger, or hardships faced where they live. Countless people running from their country face loss or trauma because of the decisions they had to make or the situations they were put through. The trauma and loss that many refugees have to face can leave nasty lasting effects on a person, and a terrible experience they will not be able to forget or things they will never get to have back. This can mean losing personal or emotional possessions. According to Amira from Diary of a Teenage Refugee, when the bombing started in her village, many neighbors came running into her house for cover. Her house was then destroyed, and her family and she had no choice but to run. This shows a loss of privacy because of the actions of her neighbors. She lost safety when her house was bombed, along with memories and everything inside that she cared for. Amira says she left home “with no ID’s, nothing.” Amira lost everything she had ever known to the terrors of the bombing. Once Sima and her husband were given an opportunity to escape with a smuggler for about $230, they took the chance, even without knowing if this was real or if they would get turned in. “Within days, they sold everything they owned. They left home with painkillers and $600 in cash.” The family lost everything they had for a little bit of money, just to be able to flee from their country, knowing they might never get the chance again. In the Shadow of War shows the lives of teenagers who stayed in Ukraine during the war, who also lost something of theirs, though not handheld. “The teens are walking the streets of Sloviansk, a town in eastern Ukraine that’s on the front lines of the war.
