The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle Book Review

The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle is a fantastic novel that is a historic drama. It starts off with a thirteen year-old girl who is going to America. She has lived in England from her sixth through her thirteenth birthday and is now traveling back to her home in Providence, Rhode Island. She is going on a “summer vacation” on a ship called, “The Seahawk”. But her family wasn’t going to travel with her, instead she was going to travel with two other families they knew. Unfortunately, the families did not show up, and neither did ANY of the other passengers! Apparently the crew talked trash about how awful the captain was, which convinced all of the passengers to not travel on the ship! Once she finally got onboard the ship “The Seahawk” she met the captain. At first, Charlotte fell in love with his properness and polite attitude. Then she saw the crew, they were rough filthy, and rude. The crew sees the captain as a terrible, cruel, and evil person, whereas Charlotte sees him as a polite man. Later on, one of the nicer crew members gives Charlotte a knife! The crew member said she “nevers knows what can happen on a ship”. Of course she rejects and tries to give it back and even considers throwing it of the ship. Charlotte suffers from seasickness and nightmares preventing her from enjoying her journey. Eventually, she gets over her seasickness and nightmares and becomes friends with the “polite” captain. Later on in the book, the crew still has something for the cruel captain and they made a plan for revenge! The captain, angry when he finds this out, decides to try to rebel against the crew. Soon after, Charlotte is put trial for murder! At the end of the book, Charlotte is a
