In stories there are important themes that can help with real life. In To Kill a Mockingbird there are a few that are not only important but they are the most shown. The book is about a girl, Scout and her brother Jem that live with their father, Atticus. It’s about a rape case that turns racist. Empathy, the true meaning of courage, and not judging people by their looks are the most important.
In To Kill a Mockingbird, one of the themes is the true meaning of courage. The true meaning of courage is overcoming your biggest fears or when you’re “licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what.” (Lee, 149). One example of courage is when Jem goes and touches the Radley house. Dill say “You gonna run out on a dare?” (Lee, 17). This is an example of courage because he goes through with the dare even though he’s nervous. Another example there is how Atticus is being a lawyer for Tom Robinson, a black man. This is courageous because he continues to help Tom Robinson even though people are going against him for it. Finally, the last example of courage is when Mrs. Dubose quit morphine. Scout said that Boo was really nice and Atticus said, “Most people are, Scout, when you finally see them” (Lee, 376). People can be really nice once you get to know them, you shouldn’t judge them on first sight. Another example is when Atticus was talking to Scout about why you shouldn’t call black people the N-word. He asked Scout indirectly how she would feel if she was called rude names. My last example is when the whole family was talking about the Ewells. They seemed poor, but nice overall at first. And then Bob tried to kill the kids.
