The Truth Behind School Uniforms

In Malden, students at the Linden STEAM Academy began wearing uniforms for the first time this year. The school, which enrolls 900 students in grades K through 8, is the only public school in Malden that has uniforms, according to principal Rich Bransfield (Sweeney).“We had a lot of parental input. “There were people who didn’t agree about school uniforms in public schools they didn’t think that was the solution” (Sweeney). The people who did not agree on having school uniforms in this quote, is right because uniforms is not the solution for bad grades or behavior problems it is the way the class or lesson is being taught. Also, it’s based on the school colors so therefore, everyone is matching. Also, because they think that school uniforms lower violence and trouble rates. Some people think that uniforms shall be forbidden across the country. The idea on school uniforms is not right because it does not allow kids to express themselves or choose what they want to wear. Most parents do not have a lot of money to be able to purchase not only the school uniforms but also clothes in general to wear on a daily basis. Also, school uniforms are supposed to make student’s life easier but instead it's become a financial burden.School uniforms does not make any impact on a student’s grades. Schools should quit requiring school uniforms because the students have lack of freedom on what they can wear so they are not allowed to express themselves. Students go to school to learn not to go to and have the school tell them what to wear and parents should have the right to tell their own kids what to wear. School uniforms are unnecessary because results show that students does not perform better in the academic category with school uniforms. The clothes people wear does not do a change when it comes to your grades. “In public schools, uniforms made no difference in mathematics achievement. Catholic schools that mandated uniforms had lower scores in reading, science and history than comparable schools that did not require uniforms” (Greenwood). Also, most do better when they go to tutoring. Student don’t do better in school if you just put uniforms in the school policy. But according to published reports, some students have not been as receptive to the idea; one high school student said a mandatory school uniform policy would be “terrible” and only cause more problems (Sweeney). There is no hard data to show that students are doing better with school uniforms than they were before. Another reason why school uniforms are terrible is because most parents do not have a lot of money to afford school uniforms. It is a waste of money to buy the same clothes for a school to follow policies. Some schools should have a conference with parents on the idea of wearing school uniforms.
