Zachary Sparks Mrs.Atkin ELA 8 7 October 2015 The Underdogs by Mike Lupica In the book, The Underdogs, by award winning author Mike Lupica depicts the story of a football team just trying to win. This fiction book is fast-paced and spirited and the title tells the reader what they will get: lovable misfits who scrape together a team and make a play for the championship. There are very few plot twists that will surprise readers, but that does not make the book any less fun. Sports fans will be taken with the action scenes, which set the reader in the middle of the field, running alongside Will and his friends. A twelve year-old running back with a huge passion for football fights to keep his team on the field. Will Tyler keeps thinking about the final play of the previous years championship when his team came so close before he fumbled the ball in the fourth quarter and caused the loss to their rivals across the river. Unfortunately, Forbes’ sneaker factory has closed and the town can no longer afford to sponsor a youth football league. Football is Will’s life, so he takes a chance and writes to the CEO of New Balance to request sponsorship and regain some of the community’s …show more content…

So Will, Chris, Tim, and the rest of the players put up a sign-up sheet. One of the few who wanted to play was Hannah, a new girl in town with great ability, speed, and as much strength as Will, signed up. The guys tested her skills and they decided she could play on the team. Will convinced his dad to coach the Bulldogs and they were finally ready! The season started and they went undefeated. They played in the championship against Forbes High School. It was the last play of the game and the Bulldogs were up by a touchdown. The Forbes had the ball and they went for a pass but the defence swats down the pass and the Bulldogs
