The book “Anthem” written by Ayn Rand is a book that deals with many topics within the main idea of the perfect world. The only problem is the word “I” is forbidden. “We” is the only acceptable word, there is no distinguishing yourself. The book takes place in the future, when all human rights are taken away and you live to your government's standards. No one has any individual rights anymore.
The Primary objective of all leaders should be to control citizens. A society that allows authority to be challenged will never succeed. This source depicts an authoritarian or totalitarian view of what a governing body should look like. The author suggests that the primary objective of government should be the “control of the citizens”, and therefore that the individuals should entirely obey said government.
Rules and Subjectivity Society is fundamentally built upon rigid structure and control using rules to attempt to maintain order amongst a society comprised of many individuals. Inherently rules put at expense the freedom of individuals to achieve personal happiness in order to build a society comprised of more equally achieving individuals. Ayn Rand’s novella Anthem builds a society in which rules restrict all individual freedoms and force a more collective ideal. The rules put in place by the society are meant to make everybody collectively more happy and prevent inherent human subjectivity; however, inherent to human nature, rules can be subjectively interpreted. In contrast to the pre-existing society presented by Rand, Equality 7-2521 seeks
Throughout the history of our nation, we as americans have never been together as a team and just accepted our different beliefs. During the 241 years as a nation there has always been an argument, a controversy, a different belief, etc. This issue has always find a way to separate our nation and keep us apart, the Declaration of Independence was created to help with these issues. This piece will be focusing on the beliefs of equality, unalienable rights, consent of the government, and the ability to alter or abolish the government. These beliefs will always keep our country apart and people of higher power need to find a way to dissolve this.
The Declaration of Independence states three unalienable rights and those are the only three rights that should be stated in it. Many will disagree with that opinion but this paper will soon prove why the three unalienable rights stated in the constitution are the only rights that should be stated. The three main points as to why those three rights are the only rights that should be stated are 1) They only needed to state three rights so as to show why they were a free country. 2)
Throughout history there has been many societies that have risen successful, but where there have been success, there is always conflict and problems lurking in the shadows. Some are solved by high authority, but when all else fails the people rise up and form reform movements. A reform movement is a kind of social movement that aims to make a gradual change, or change in certain aspects of society, rather than rapid or fundamental changes. Countless times the United States has experienced a vast history of reforms. In fact, reforms are a key characteristic, which allows the continued success of democracy.
The rules in Anthem include the word I being destroyed and erased from history being replace by us and we. Anyone who says I will be killed. The government was made with good intentions but eventually it was corrupted. The government originally wanted everyone to be completely equal means that they took the will of the people. Other rules include men not being allowed to be alone, two people not being allowed to be alone, Men and women not being able to speak with each other on a personal level, You can’t have any friends The word ego is the most important word, Writing stuff is not allowed unless the consul allows it and everything that is not listed is forbidden.
Despite the current state of affairs, citizens still possess the right to freedom of expression, freedom of the press, freedom of religion, and the right to petition the government. Equal opportunity is still an ideal that stands today and becomes better with time because it gives all citizens the same opportunity. Despite advances in technology, ideals of justice still stand as the legal system remains in place to protect citizens and keep them safe. It is important to note that all these ideals still exist and have improved over time in order to keep the value of safeguarding people's rights as the basis of the political
The “Four Freedoms” was the main reason why the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was developed. “The Declaration was drafted over two years by the Commission on Human Rights, chaired by former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt.” (“The Four Freedoms” 1). It was adopted on December 10, 1948 and is known to be “one of the most widely translated documents in the world” (“The Four Freedoms” 1). This declaration insists that all rights be upheld by governments and people to secure basic human rights (“The Four Freedoms”
The rulers have appealed to their people with such idealism, promising a world free of jealousy or unfairness. “I owe nothing to my brothers, nor do I gather debts from them. I ask none to live for me, nor do I live for any others. I covet no man’s soul, nor is my soul theirs to covet. ”(96)
Ayn Rand’s Anthem depicts a collectivist society where no man is allowed to be an individual. Due to this society making the people believe that there is no “I” but only a “we” the people of the community blindly believe what the higher power tells them. The people in the society of Anthem live with jobs that the head of the government give them and emotion is pushed to the side, all leading to Equality questioning and eventually breaking the law. Equality is a symbol of identity within Anthem who rebels against the system secretly. The ideals and rules of a collectivist society represented in Anthem by Ayn Rand show that collectivism is not an efficient way to create peace and order in a society.
America, the land of the free, was founded upon the standards life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. In America’s early years, Thomas Paine, in his book Rights of Man characterized this country’s government as functioning in unison with no difficulties. When you break it down and look at the big picture, some people will argue that increased diversity has brought the nation to an all time peak, in terms of unity. Meanwhile, others maintain the idea that Thomas Paine’s assessment is mistaken for what is to one day be achieved. Yet while we would like to believe in his visionary, it unfortunately does not hold true today regarding both our modern politics and social principles.
To prosper in a just and moral way, America must stand united. Thoreau demonstrates the accountability between the two parties: “The government itself, which is only the mode which the people have chosen to execute their will, is equally liable to be abused and perverted” (Thoreau, 1849/1998, p. 127). The people who compose a nation must not be complacent and inactive. Inactivity prevents progress.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights is the foundation
A glorious nation within which exists harmony of the people, the perfect union described by the preamble of the Constitution, carrying out all of its rules and laws. A government that would make the nation’s founders proud. More than what could be said by our current form of government. Government should also move towards better connections with foreign powers. While the government may communicate on a global level, the information is so diluted by the time it reaches the people that it is next to useless.
