The World fair was the engineering project of its time. It brought plenty of excitement and attention to itself, but it also brought crime. The problem is, even though everything seems fine with the fair, there were bad things still happening. Stealing, cheating, and in extreme cases even murder. Chicago was in charge of building the World’s fair, but ended up hosting a murderer in its walls.
The book “The Devil in The White City” was composed by Erik Larson. This book re-creates the history of the Chicago’s World Fair of 1893. Larson wanted to highlight precisely what went down at the World Fair of 1893 and why everything happened. This book was actually based off of Chicago’s World Fair, as well as what happened and put his own twist on it story. The author has several purposes within this book, which is a narrative non-fiction (a history with a strong story).

The non fiction novel, “The Devil in the White City”, is filled with twists and turns as author Eric Larson compares the lives of two men thought to be living two entirely different lives. Chicago’s World Fair, in remembrance of the landing of Columbus in America, is a major aspect in the lives of both men, named H.H Holmes and Daniel Burnham. In this specific passage, however, the literary element of symbolism is applied and very well so. The illuminations lighting up the city symbolizes positivity. With European rivals always “one step ahead”, the lights covering Chicago specifically give a sense of hope and America’s potential to be improved.
He ends up running into the streets and sees a boy in a car who will soon become one of his partners his name Lev. With a window rolled down Connor pulls up the lock and takes him out. They then struggle because cops are shooting tranquilizer darts and they make a bus crash. They meet a girl that was also getting unwound and they all share one common goal and that is running from the cops. Connor portraits a lot of different adjectives and that is how he got away.

In the book The Devil and the White City, Erik Larson tells a story of 2 very determined men, Daniel Burnham and H. Holmes, using their talents and determination to create good results, but also bad results; one being a very successful and good spirited architect, the other being a witty evil serial killer. It reveals how in every good act or intention, there is some kind of evil, and also the other way around. Erik Larson explores the underlying difference between good and evil, while telling 2 tales of Daniel Burnham, and Henry H. Holmes Daniel Burnham and Henry H. Holmes are alike in many ways, as explored throughout the novel. Both of these men used their determination and skills to accomplish many things, good or bad.
Erik Larson studied Russian history, language and culture at the University of Pennsylvania where he graduated. He also got his masters in journalism from Columbia University. He has worked or wrote for Bucks County Courier Times, The Wall Street Journal, Time Magazine, The Atlantic, Harper’s and The New Yorker. The events of The Devil in The White City take place during 1893 at the Worlds Colombian Exposition in Chicago. I feel this is a good book and I will probably go back and re read it just to get a better feel for it, I just wish I didn’t wait till the last minute to start reading.
Throughout “The Devil and Tom Walker” there are many pieces of symbolism, but these items represent character in today’s society. Tom Walker, the main character, represents greed in society today because of his injudicious actions. “‘You shall open a broker’s shop in Boston next month,’ said the black man. ‘I’ll do it tomorrow if you wish,’ said Tom Walker. ‘You shall lend money at two percent a month.’
