To Kill a Mockingbird, a novel by Harper Lee addresses numerous sensitive topics such as racism, rape, and most importantly, the loss of innocence. Scout, an innocent girl who encounters these topics slowly loses her innocence as the novel progresses. Through this plot, To Kill a Mockingbird tries to teach the readers as parents, what they should do to protect their children from these topics. In modern times, parents still try their best to protect their children from controversial topics and media, which mostly include violence. To Kill a Mockingbird would support the idea that parents should not shield their children from controversial media. Harper Lee usages Atticus Finch, the father of Jem and Scout, as a character who is the typical father figure and, as a single parent, has a lot of responsibility to carry to protect his children from the many controversial topics that went around in the world during that time. To Kill a Mockingbird features the Tom Robinson trial as a controversial media since it deals with matters like rape. The moment in the court when the plaintiff talks about rape, Judge Taylor informs the court that “There has been a request… that this courtroom be cleared of spectators, or at least of women and children, a request that will be denied for the time being” (Lee 232). Some people believe that controversial media harms the minds of children and leads them into the wrong paths. Many people today view violence as one of the controverisal topics in media; therefore, these resources should genuinely alarm parents regarding their children. Darlene from the Associated Press believes that violence can manipulate the mind of the children. In an article puublished by the associated press, Sen.Orrin Hatch, the panel’s chairman, says that, “Exposure to media portrayals of violence increases aggressive behavior in children… As one expert put it, arguing against the link between media violence and the violent actions of our youth is 'like arguing against gravity’” (Darlene). This shows how these people believe that media violence can affect the mind of children; therefore parents should shield their children from them. Not only can violence in media affect the minds of children, it can also affect their behavior. One can agree with this statement in many ways. Some parents believe that controversial media like violence can manipulate the mind of children as Darlene likes to put it as “The 30-page document concluded that the media dominate children's lives, as they are "exceedingly violent" and that they can lead to real world violence.” This all lead to the claim parents
