In the United States, there is a blend of different economic classes within society. The different classes range from upper class to middle class to lower class. While 15% of the 46.2 million people in America hold the upper class and
60% hold the middle class, 25% of the population holds the lower class with 15% of that lower class living under the poverty line. Many people argue that getting rid of poverty in America would be better. But like Gans I also believe that poverty serves a positive purpose in our society.
