In stories, we often learn a lot about a character by how they deal with conflict. Conflicts are what instigate character development, and the novels Fahrenheit 451 and Learning to Read and Write are great examples of this. Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 tells the story of Guy Montag, a "fireman" who lives in a society where burning books is the norm. Frederick Douglass' Learning to Read and Write is the autobiographical story of a slave secretly trying to learn to read and write. Bradbury and Douglass both use the conflicts Person vs. Person, Person vs. Self, and Person vs. Society to develop their characters over the course of their respective texts.

In the novel the job of a fireman is to start a fire and watch the forbidden literature burn, these firemen had never read the books they burn nor were they all allowed to keep one for more than 24 hours.

1. Ethos, Logos, and Pathos are important aspects in Martin Luther King’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail”. The meaning behind Ethos is to appeal to ethics, which means convincing readers of the author’s credibility, meanwhile Pathos is an appeal to emotion, and is used in literature to convince readers of an argument by getting their emotions involved. Last but not least, Logos is the appeal to logic and is used to persuade readers using a force of reason. These terms are important in MLK’s Letter from Birmingham Jail because the foundation of the letter is built upon ideas of Ethos, Pathos, and Logos.

The style of writing has changed drastically in excess of the past years; each person has their own writing modus operandi that helps to get their point from corner to corner or refer to all that jazz that they are trying to portray. Every author seems to have their own unique way of getting their message to their audience, for instance, they might share personal experiences related to their topic or analysis. Some authors might write about something affected them emotionally and influenced them to act a certain way.
In this short passage by William Zinsser, Zinsser used compare and contrast to inform the readers about his personal opinions of being a writer. Due to different understandings and opinions on how to be a good writer, Zinsser decided to use compare and contrast in order to present a clean and detailed differences to the reader about how different people’s writing style can vary. By doing this, it would be extremely helpful for the readers to distinguish the differences of each writing style, see the benefits and disadvantages, and ultimately gather enough information to decide which style fits them the best. At the panel with Dr. Brock, Zinsser gave the audience a broader view of different writing styles and how they contribute differently.
Near the beginning of his renowned essay, "Civil Disobedience," Henry David Thoreau appeals to his fellow citizens when he says, "...I ask for, not at once no government, but at once a better government. " This request serves as a starting point from which the rest of "Civil Disobedience" emerges. Thoreau 's essay is particularly compelling because of its incorporation of rhetorical strategies, including the use of logos, ethos, pathos, purposive discourse, rhetorical competence and identification. I will demonstrate how each of these rhetorical techniques benefit Thoreau 's persuasive argument. Thoreau uses logos throughout his essay to strengthen his argument with reasoning.

Final Analysis Writers of works of literature have long employed various stylistic devices to execute their literary objectives. Some of these stylistic devices include – but are not limited to – the use of settings, theme, and characters. Furthermore, such works can be analyzed, understood and interpreted through the lens of theories such as Feminism, Post-colonialism, and Existentialism. The use of various stylistic devices in service of the exploration of various literary theories serves to make literature vibrant, richer, and much more useful to the society in which the work is produced. Through the use of the mentioned stylistic devices, writers are able to demonstrate links that exist between their works of literature and theories such as Feminism, Post-colonialism, and Existentialism.
