Human Tendencies Ever since the dawn of agriculture, it has been in our human nature to be greedy and selfish. We, as Homo sapiens, also believe themselves to be superior among all species. Due to our biological flaws, emotions, and sensitivities, we reject anything that is foreign to us. For example, in Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s short story, most of his characters demonstrate the flaws of humanity. He uses his characters to display the way humans act and think so poorly of anything outside the norm. The townspeople, even Pelayo and Elisenda showed actions of selfishness, greed, and a great sense of dignity. In “The Very Old Man with Enormous Wings,” Marquez provides his audience with a clear picture of his perception on humans by using descriptive language to capture the imagery, satire, and a theme of hypocrisy in human beings. …show more content…

But to everyones’ surprise, the homeless looking man had wings. Although Pelayo did not have the heart to kill him, he and Elisenda put him through torture. The Man with the enormous wings became the circus freak in town. Consumed by greed, Pelayo and Elisenda even started to charge people for admission. Like any toy or movie, we outgrow it or get bored with it. The townspeople showed boredom in the Angel when the Spider Women came to town. The man with the enormous wings was only let out of the chicken coop when he attracted no more visitors, and after the coop had become so worn down and collapsed. Given the little freedom that he had, the man was finally able to regain his strength and fly away from his living
