Marlene Xique 10/4/17 M8 The Anti-Hero Anti-hero, anti-hero is a character that lacks characterists of a hero. It is the opposite of a hero but not a villian. The character has characteristics such as being selfish, insecurity, rebellious, and is very independent. The character can aslo be the outsider who does not fit-in, and has problems with authority & with rules, which we learned in class.
A common archetype is the rebel archetype and can be seen in many books and non-literary works like movies or songs. The rebel represents bravery in the face of injustice and going against the beliefs of the majority no matter how radical or illogical it may seem at the time because they will never give up on their beliefs. A rebel in literature always opposes the higher power, not afraid to fight, whether it be verbally or physically, to succeed in bringing power to an often oppressed group. In most literature the rebel, seen as the underdog, stands up for good against an evil force, however, the rebel can also be antagonist of the work. Whether they represent good or evil, they often inevitably lead to the breakdown of society.
In the hero 's journey, this comes in the form of a rival. A rival can start out in the form of a helper but slowly develop into an antagonist that may lead the hero to never fulfill their hero status. This character is often unpredictable, and may not understand themselves, causing them to project their anger on
Many stories in literature are not complete without an Antagonist. The Antagonist can be the embodiment of evil or just a roadblock for the main character to overcome. In the short story Sweat, written by Zora Neale Hurston, features an abusive husband, Sykes, as the Antagonist. Sykes dominates and abuses his hard-working wife, Delia. Whereas, Edgar Allen Poe, author of The Cask of Amontillado, uses an ambiguous relationship between Fortunato, a man full of ego and arrogance, who wrongs protagonist Montresor.

Homer’s Polyphemus from the Odyssey and George Lucas’ Ewoks from Star Wars: Return of the Jedi fit this description exactly, but the Ewoks fit it better. Polyphemus, the strong, dumb, overconfident cyclops is a good villain, but then again vicious, smart, patient Ewoks are better.

The archetype I chose was The Evil Figure with Ultimately Good Heart which meaning is; a devil figure with the potential to be good, this person is usually saved by the love of the hero. This archetype has been represented by many movies, books, and video games. The archetype of The Evil Figure with Ultimately Good Heart is shown in the movie "Despicable Me" by Gru who is a cold-hearted man who 's only objective is to become the world 's greatest villain. It is also shown in the movie "Shrek" by Shrek an evil ogre that is feared and wanted dead by many in the valley where his beloved swamp resides. It also appears in Hades who is the king of the underworld ruler of the dead in Greek mythology.
