Yuri Kochiyama is a Japanese-American civil rights activist, and author of “Then Came the War” in which she describes her experience in the detention camps while the war goes on. December 7th, is when Kochiyama life began to change from having the bombing in Pearl Harbor to having her father taken away by the FBI. All fishing men who were close to the coast were arrested and sent into detention camps that were located in Montana, New Mexico and South Dakota. Kochiyama’s father had just gotten out of surgery before he was arrested and from all the movement he’d been doing, he begun to get sick. Close to seeing death actually, until the authorities finally let him be hospitalized.
The novel The Wednesday Wars by Gary D. Schmidt has many overall themes, the story follows a young boy in middle school learning about the nature of life through sad, happy, and devastating events. Holling Hoodhood is the only person in Miss. Baker's class doesn't go to a religious school on Wednesday afternoon, so instead, he has to spend his time with Miss. Baker reading Shakespeare and cleaning the chalkboard erasers. The first theme that is portrayed in The Wednesday Wars by Gary D. Schmidt is that we can learn from others' mistakes , this means that when others mess up it helps us because we then know what not to do .This was portrayed in The Wednesday Wars when Hollings sister Heather runs away to
"The Most Dangerous Game" opens with a conversation between, Whitney and Rainsford. Both are on a boat headed to Rio, Brazil. Both men are hunting enthusiasts. They discuss the ability of an animal to understand the mechanics of hunting. Rainsford believes that animals are unable of feeling or understanding any human emotions.
I Just saw Mr. Jonathan he came in my store and said “Have you heard we just lost Charleston, England has it under control” They were lead by Major General Benjamin Lincoln and he lost by the British Lieutenant General Sir Henry Clinton and his army of 10,000 at Charleston, South Carolina. He captured 3,000 Patriots and a lot of equipment and ammunition. During the siege England only lost 250 men. I replied with “What if the use those men and come north and kill us all” Jonathan said “ I don’t know what we will do we must get prepared we can’t loose with all the work we have put into this war we have risked every thing”.
It is sometimes difficult for individuals to settle the discrepancy between truth and illusion, and consequently they drive others away, by shutting down. Mrs. Ross, in The Wars by Timothy Findley, is seen as brittle while she is attending church, and cannot deal with the cruel reality of the war and therefore segregates herself from the truth by blacking it out. As a result, she loses her eyesight, and never gets to solve the clash between her awareness of reality and the actuality of the world. She hides behind a veil, and her glasses to distance herself from reality. Mrs. Davenport has to wheel her around in Rowena’s chair to keep her awake, so she doesn’t harbour up subconscious feeling within her dreams, which she is unable to deal with.
There is a quite menacing and reverent suspenseful tone to the "The Most Dangerous Game”. Every circumstance is set up to give the most extreme measure of dread and suspicion in the reader, from Rainsford's underlying tumble overboard to his revelation of General Zaroff's true purpose and learning that he will be next in the hunt. Richard Connell utilizes basic and direct dialect to bring out a practically highly contrasting world, with a protagonist and an antagonist, yet takes into consideration nuance in motivation and event. Beginning on the yacht, Rainsford appears to be a cold hearted hunter as he and his partner were disagreeing on the idea that animals have feelings. Rainsford objected stating “Who cares how a jaguar feels?", "Bah!
Deaths of War No one ever thinks about what a soldier goes through when they lose someone from their platoon during a war. The emotional and physical burden a death brings, as shown in All the Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien, can bring out the guilt and fear in a young man, who was thrown into a war. The first death witnessed in Tim O’Briens platoon was Ted Lavender.
Two different groups of violence in literature or violence from a character in violence from an author. In order to show how these type show up in text, I’ve chosen the book war of the worlds, by HG Wells. The first type of violence in the stories and aliens coming to earth and caused all sorts of havoc on the people. They break things apart, blow things up, and destroy things. Over all they were extremely violent creatures.
War is a very psychologically traumatizing event. In Tim O’Brien’s novel The Things They Carried, he highlights the harrowing effects war has on a person’s psyche. Characters such as Norman Bowker, Tim O’Brien, and Jimmy Cross are deeply affected by war, but how they deal with their guilt is completely different. Norman Bowker’s dealing with his war guilt is highlighted in “Speaking of Courage”. This story displays Bowker’s dealings after the war in his town and how he deals with guilt over his friend, Kiowa’s death.
War has a profound and lasting impact on individuals and society. In “The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien, he tells different stories of before, during and after war and how it affects the soldiers, mentally and physically. In these stories Tim O’Brien illustrates these traumas and the long-lasting effects and impact that the war will always have on these men. Even though all the men didn’t survive the ones that did continue to have traumatic flashbacks. War has a lasting impact on individuals and society, affecting not only the physical but the mental and emotional well-being of those involved.
People go through life experiencing both big and small events. The soldiers had to deal with fear, guilt ,and death at war. These things can change a person for the better, or for the worse, but it’s what they do after the events that make them who they are. For soldiers in war, this is what they have to deal with everyday when they were in Vietnam fighting. Tim O’Brien tells of these stories in The Things They Carried to show how war can change their mentality and their destiny in life.
Chris Hedges, a former war correspondent, has a memory overflowing with the horrors of many battlefields and the helplessness of those trapped within them. He applies this memory to write War Is a Force That Gives Us Meaning, where he tutors us in the misery of war. To accomplish this goal, Hedges uses impactful imagery, appeals to other dissidents of war and classic writers, and powerful exemplification. Throughout his book, Hedges batters the readers with painful and grotesque, often first-hand, imagery from wars around the globe. He begins the book with his experience in Sarajevo, 1995.
The Wei, Jin South, and North Dynasties had many wars during this period which affected Asian culture both politically and economically, leading to various changes among costumes and the social atmosphere. However, there were many changes to culture, the partner from the Qin and Han period did not vary. The wars that took placed caused a lot of distress and migration from southern and northern areas thus causing diversity for costumes because of migration areas. Chinese costumes and clothing had the most rapid development during this period.
The rays of the sun glistened through the mist as it rose between the mountains, covering the landscape with a wet cloak. Our world is cruel and dangerous, many believe in sheltering the future generations from the harsh reality of life. Unfortunately, these individuals are mistaken, yes leaving them unaware may spare their innocence but in the process they grow up living without caution. The eviction of “The Wars” will add to this error, the book discusses many topics, in which students can learn from and use to better themselves. Students are taught about the hardships of war, the great “war heroes” and triumph of soldiers but, it is not what they are taught that is the problem.
