The War of The Worlds The War of the Worlds by H.G Wells is a novel about the near end of the human race. It is the story of the Aztecs, Incas, and Aborigines and both evolution and its conclusion, It tells the the tale of how mankind shatters and fragments. In 1899 the narrator, who lives in England, meets with an astronomer who has seen great flames leaving Mars. The flames turn out to be great craft sent from Mars. The Martians are first greeted as curiosities, then pests, and finally weak enemies. The narrator sees the opening of the first capsule and the first bombardment by the alien enemy. The narrator is a writer who is fairly wealthy and is extremely intellectual. He tries to maintain composer through most situations and displays extreme curiosity. His eventual goal is to find his wife. there are two people who the narrator travels with during the book. HG Wells uses the personality of the artillery gunner to describe the breakdown of the human perception of reality in a crisis. The narrator finds the artillery gunner near his destroyed town and the two travel together. The gunner asks about the Martians and they discuss the invasion. Later in the book the narrator finds the gunner. He is attempting to tunnel into London to start a new secret society. He briefly convinces the new narrator to help him but his insanity becomes clearly obvious. The character of the curate represents the complete collapse of the human mind. After the martian attack on his town, he follows the narrator. He eventually comes to view the Martians as servants of God. The narrator and the curate are are trapped in a house for around a week and during this time the curate becomes a problem for the narrator. The curate steals food and eventually attempts to bring the Martians to their hiding spot which leads to his ultimate demise. The narrator is strangely “saved” by the curate, he says,”[ I am inclined to think that the weakness and insanity of the curate warned me].” (page
