Wells, uses the specific fascination of readers to bring to life the pictures in mind. H.G. Wells had written other science fiction books such as The First Men in the Moon and The Time Machine. Although a known author he has not won any awards for the novels he has written. The War of the Worlds is a science fiction novel typically intended for those who have a slightly better vocabulary than others. The title of the book indicates that there may be a sort of clash between multiple worlds in the universe. Often seen on the outside of the book is a sketch of alien creatures not known to Earth.

After the military is unsuccessful in the attempts to stop the Martians the people, already fleeing, are being forced to move even more outward from the source of the Martians. The narrator borrows a horse and a cart from a local man and transports his family to Leatherhead in hopes of their safety. Since he borrows the cart he has to return it to the man in the countryside. The area is being overrun by the invaders and forces the narrator into hiding. The curate explains his own ideas to the narrator. He explains of a world in which he rules over the surviving people, like a dictatorship. On the other hand, the artilleryman provides the narrator with his own ideas of the world in the apocalyptic state the world may be placed in with the invasion of the Martians.
