How does Eminem use language to let people know who he is? As a teenage dropout, Eminem found a way to express his passion for language, as well as to release his youthful anger, through the emerging musical genre of hip-hip. In many of his raps, he displays his verbal prowess, wit and flair of storytelling through his use of sophisticated language. This is primarily seen in his solo rap, “The Way I Am”, released in 2000. His rap song “The Way I am” expresses how fame and admiration can both be rewarding and sometimes frustrating. He expresses how he is sick and tired of being admired, of being followed by fans and photographers. Eminem’s rap song “The Way I am” is a story of Eminem’s struggle with fame. He wrote this rap as a way of releasing his anger and wrath about the media, his fans and the record company. This rap was written by Eminem so as to express his anger towards the media that twists and makes up things along the way to attract more attention. By refereeing to the Columbine High School Massacre, he explains and tries to show people how the media twists events and dictates what the audience should feel and judge about the person being reported. The Columbine High school Massacre happened because Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold wanted revenge because they were bullied and mistreated during their time at that school. However, the media criminalizes them and makes people think that they are savages without clearly explaining the real motives of their actions.
