Inherent to our culture, lying is one of the most common mishaps in daily communication with one another. Lying can be seen as early as in the days of Cain and Able in the bible, when Cain told God he did not lie (Wiesel, par. 20). Whether the bible is talking about a real-life event or one that is teaching a lesson, it is showing that lying has taken place for most of man’s history. The answer to why human’s lie can be traced back to childhood and the surrounding culture one grows up in. This question has plagued my mind for the better part of my life, often puzzling me when it comes to human nature. As humans, we are creatures of habit. This does carry over into adulthood, however, as adults we try to validate more reasons to lie. Lying is lazy. It is a lazy way of dealing with the everyday issues of life. We lie to impress, to not disappoint, to uphold a status, to barter a better deal, to avoid certain prosecutions, and we lie to ourselves in order to cope with various realities that one has trouble accepting in life. Lying is a major topic of interest in my life. I have a hard time understanding why people lie to others, even when they are faced with the truth. The sociocultural approach to this topic details how an individual is affected by his or her surrounding culture. The decisions one makes based off how they feel their social status will be affected can be pinpointed using this approach. The culture one is raised in often can be an indicator to how one will act later in life.
