America wanted to expand later in the years. Expanding had to take place more of the west. The Spanish owned most of the west of America, including some of the Pacific Ocean. Some of the most important figures that took part in the Oregon Compromise was the President James K. Polk and the Prime Minister Robert Peel. They two negotiated deals for them to own the west of America.
The Westward Expansion consisted of almost 7 million Americans migrating west, hoping to get land and be wealthy. It is often called Manifest Destiny, because many people believed settlers was intended to expand the west. Because so many people thought this way it was also thought the U.S was physically separated from Europe. This migration of people included people from Spain, France, Mexico, and other countries. SOUTHWEST SETTLEMENTS The Southwest was home to many cultures, some forced, and some created. Although there was quite for many years for the local Native Americans. Spaniards took over and controlled much land to create much of what is left today. But not only were Native American’s controlled, land was formed and taken as well.
How did California, The Golden State, become a part of the United States of America? The answer lies in the Mexican-American War. This controversial war was fought in 1846 under the presidency of James K. Polk, a strong believer in Manifest Destiny. It took place after the annexation of Texas and was a result of a dispute over land between the Nueces River and Rio Grande. The Mexican-American War was unjustified for three reasons, for one; Polk intentionally instigates the war with Mexico, secondly; the U.S. only wanted Mexican land to expand their own, and finally; in order to obtain this land, America violates Mexican laws.

The Western United States was founded upon several layers of political, economic, and social causes that started the Western movement. While William Hyde’s’ book Empires, Nations, and Families: A New History of the North American West 1800-1860 as it depicts the European look and motives for the westward movement. According to Barr and Hyde’s the west before the westward expansion tended to owned and operated by the large Spanish population in Mexico and the enormous cities of the Native Americans that made up the land.
The people who settled the west were greatly dependent on the US government and the policies they adopted. The settling of the west in the late 19th century was similar to the settlement of the south in the 1830’s. Andrew Jackson drove out the indians so that the valuable land of the south could be secured by white settlers. Once again, the federal government made it possible to settle the west by forcing indians off of their lands. A recurring theme in American history is manifest destiny and the attempt to develop unsettled lands by the federal government.

People were drawn to the West because it was scene as the last resort to make a living when all else failed in the East. Communication with friends and family who had moved west led these pioneers to believe the journey would be easy and the reward for getting west would be best. And the greatly available land was the strongest pulling factor to people interested in adventuring west. Migration was a personal choice that depended on several key factors, “Age of the head of household; economic status; personal attitudes; and projected costs and benefits of the resettlement.” Most historians agree that the majority of the people who migrated west were middle class and mostly immigrants to the US.
America has come such a long way to be known as the Melting Pot. The reason behind this is that America is extremely diverse and has many different people. Many of immigrants, both legal and illegal, from around the world, are migrating to here, in California. For some, this is an advantage. Economically, this means there are more consumers- more people to take advantage of the opportunities and resources that this state has to offer.
People came from all over the United States and the world to strike it rich in California. a. Some of the countries people came from were South America, Europe, Mexico, Hawaii, and China. b. People came from all of the other U.S. states as well. c. The people that traveled to California and left everything behind were called the 49ers.
People in America during this time seeking for opportunities out west that they did not think they had in the east. During this time, gold was discovered in California that attracted many people not just from America, but all over the world. Plus, the government encouraged people to go mining for gold by giving miners cheaper land to live on out west. As stated in the Homestead Act of 1862, United States Congress, a law providing free land for citizens of the United States in western territories. This act encouraged people to mine for gold in California so they could have cheaper land than they would anywhere else.
