The short story that I have chosen for this analysis is by a Nigerian author named Abubakar Adam Ibrahim. The title of this short story is The Whispering Trees. First off, I’ll explain what exactly The Whispering Trees are. In the story, the Whispering Trees is the name given to the woods that were located down the hill from where the protagonist lives. Back when he was a child, he and his group of friends would often go there to avoid punishment from their parents where they did something they were not supposed to. It was also the place where they played and spend time with each other but they stopped going there when one of the protagonist’s friends had died while in the woods. The people had a rumour which was that the resident “iskokai” made the trees ‘whisper’. Hence the name the Whispering Trees. Next I shall move on to the synopsis of this short story. The Whispering Trees is the story of the protagonist, a man who lost his sight in an accident that had claimed his mother’s life. After recovering from his injuries, he continues his life as a blind man but it proved difficult for him. He was living in despair, sadness, anger and depression for most of the beginning of his life after the accident. It was his girlfriend who gave him some comfort during this difficult period and gave him some light in his already dark world.
