Book Analysis- The Devil in the White City The Chicago World’s Fair continues to be one of America’s defining moments. This is where America proved to the world they had grown up and were able to hold their own. Erik Larson eloquently illustrates the entire fair in little black words on paper. Although he was not alive during this event, Larson is able to reconstruct the story with factual events; he created twists to keep you ensnared into the story.
The book, The Devil in the White City, by Erick Larson includes a chapter called, “Departures.” Thus far the reader has followed H.H. Holmes’ story of gruesome murders and other crimes that took place in Chicago during the late 1800’s. Holmes is a charming man who has manipulated many, including creditors, into doing things his way. After a certain crime, a man named Cowie is suspicious of Holmes. Cowie brings together all of the creditors, and they now realize Holmes’ fraud.
The First Part Last is a novel about this teenager named Bobby and how teenage pregnancy affects his life. The story goes from then to now every chapter and, and at the end of the book, the then and now meets up. Bobby Impregnates a teenage girl named Nia (his girlfriend). The story talks about how they make it through this rough time. Near the end, Nia starts to get eclipse, which girls have a chance to get when they are pregnant.
In the short essay Pretty Like a White Boy by Drew Hayden Taylor and the short story Sara’s Gift by Barbara Smith, both protagonists come into conflict with forming their identity. The two characters illustrate Indigenous peoples' struggle with questioning their identity and searching for a belonging. The protagonists in both stories struggle with not fitting in because of their appearance. Drew Hayden Taylor never knew his white father, he grew up with his Ojibway mother and lived in the indigenous community, but was always looked at differently. “It’s Not Easy Having Blue Eyes in a Brown Eyed Village”(Taylor 504).
This sick, twisted, mystery novel “The Names of Dead Girls” by Eric Rickstad, is about how retired detective Frank Rath, is trying to figure out who has been mysteriously stalking his "daughter" and who is to blame for the death of the 3 girls. As each victim drops dead unexpectedly, all eyes go on Preacher for the blame. Preacher had raped and murdered numerous girls and one of them being Luara Rath. Frank Rath’s only sister. Rath is taking every chance to keep his “daughter”, Rachel Rath, safe from whoever is out there to molest, including Preacher.
In the Chicago smog, H.H. Holmes lured hundreds of victims into his murder mansion, and killed them seemingly without motive or conscience. In The Devil in the White City, Erik Larson goes into a detailed description of the murders of H.H. Holmes and delves into what his motives might be. The motives of Holmes serial killings were pleasure and profit. Holmes would profit off murder by selling skeletons, life insurances fraud, and as a business strategy. After murdering Julia, Holmes got her skeleton articulated then, “[Holmes] promptly sold the skeleton to Hahneman Medical College… for many times the amount he had paid Chappell.”
Have you ever stopped and really thought about what kinds of bias people project onto a social group that you are a part of? The answer is most likely yes. However, have we truly seen a straight-forward and shameless point of view from someone who lays out all their different biases and stereotypes? Early in the book, the idea to host a fair for Columbus is mentioned.
