Barchou would remember them as these two as cowardice and had no fight left in them. These statements contradict many of his earlier encounters with how the author or other Algerians might have depicted the women and their mistreatment.
On one hand, Barchou would have described the scene as a means to slander the women for their horrific act against another human being. While on the other the author along with the other Algerians saw them as Heroines and was praised for their courage. The mother was only protecting her child with only having one option left. She would not want to see the enemy kill her child right in front of her, along with the other woman who would have done anything to get away from that Frenchman. The movie takes place in Morocco in the year 1904, which had been a source of conflict between Germany, France, and the British Empire whose influence was trying to make it up to the political elites. Mulai Ahmed er Raisuli is the leader of the band of Berbers as a way of opposing the Sultan who he had believed to be corrupt. A short time into the movie the Raisuli had kidnapped Mrs. Eden Pedecaris, along with her children as a way demand a heavy ransom that will embarrass the Sultan and incite a civil war within the country. There were many cultural barriers that are the kidnapped family had to overcome along with coming to terms of how the Raisuli treats his men and evidence towards honor. One instance where Eden was beyond disbelieving when the Raisuli was disciplining four of his men for drinking out of the well. His argument for only killing two of his men was to teach the other a lesson and show that he is gracious to others and the faith. Fast-forwarding to when Eden and her children escape only to be recaptured by a group of thieves, the Raisuil single handily comes to their rescue to bring them back to safety.
