During the eighteenth century, the workforce was predominantly farmers and craftspeople. Tools used for labor were manually crafted such as locally made hoe for tilling the ground, matchet, bows and arrows for hunting, stones to make fire. The workforce was centered more on men and boys than women. But as we move into the late twentieth century upward, the impact of IT( Information Technology) became profound, consequently, the face of the workforce began to change. The emergence of computers and automated systems required new skill sets. These opened up more opportunities for the workforce as well as more job functions were created because of the need for expertise in the operations of these applications. Previously, all communications within the office environment between clients and business partners were done face-to-face that has been taken care of with the use of electronic mail(email). Next, new opportunities for flexible jobs have crop up. A large portion of the workforce in this generation are working from home due to IT. With a computer and internet connection, you can get any job around the globe and also set up a business. It reduces real estate and office equipment cost thereby more focus is geared towards the building of the business for business owners. According to Pew Research Center, B Drake (2014) points out “By 2022, the agency projects that 31.9% of those ages 65 to 74 will still be working. That compares with 20.4% of the same age bracket in the workforce in 2002 and 26.8% who were in the workforce in 2012.”. This is due to the influence that IT has on the workforce.
