Kelly Clayton Ms. Ambrose English II; 1st Period April 27, 2023 The Worldwide Topic of Michael Fay The Michael Fay crisis has been a controversy across America since it happened in 1994. Many people have their own opinions on this situation, but many people also just need more information to guide them in choosing which side they support. In “Time to Assert American Values,” an article published in the New York Times, the writer emphasizes his opinion on the Michael Fay situation by using anecdotal evidence. In contrast, “Rough Justice: A Caning in Singapore Stirs up a Fierce Debate about Crime and Punishment,” an article by Alejandro Reyes, discusses the incident around Michael Fay by using empirical and ethical evidence to support …show more content…

Incorporating another family’s story, the Shius, Nee compares it to Michael Fay’s story because they have very similar situations. The two effects on each of these families were completely different and Nee explains these differences to the readers by saying, “Both the Fays and Shius had reacted differently to their sons’ actions. To the Asian couple, what had happened was shameful and embarrassing. The Americans experienced neither shame nor remorse” (Nee 5). This idea of differences between the Fays and Shius is empirical because it gives the readers an image of the two families and its differences based on observations. This observation is valid in certain ways, but is also invalid because the Singaporean culture is completely different from Americans beliefs, therefore their reactions will be different. The author uses Michael Fay’s background to support the idea of Michael Fay to not have good intentions. Nee adds, “Michael Fay, on the other hand, did not have a good family environment to back him. His parents had separated with each having remarried, a factor which still affects him. He is now back in America with his natural father, living apart from his mother who had remarried a Chinese American. Signs of Michaels disturbed life were reported last week. After reading all three articles, the reader should have been able to conclude that The New York Times article is all based upon conceited, anecdotal evidence used to maneuver the way that the reader thinks about the dilemma. The New York Times wants the reader to believe that the caning of Michael Fay was out of bitter animosity. In “Contrasting End to Tale of Two Vandals in Singapore,” the reader should have realized that the implication of this article was that Michael Fay deserved to be caned because of the usage of anecdotal and ethical evidence. As a result of comprehending these articles thoroughly, it is evident that Reyes provides a plethora of valid information allowing the reader to decide for themselves what they want to
