The author made the tone of the story depressing because the topic is depressing. He makes it depressing to show you how it really was in the time. The story appeals to sight because it’s very descriptive. The time was a devastating time many people lost homes businesses and family In the introduction to “The Worst Hard Times” the author uses syntax by using repetition. The author says “Not a …” and “It scared” several times. The author made the tone depressing because it makes you feel like your back in the time zone. The repetition of the two phrases makes an emphasis on the topic. The point the author is trying to get across is that there was nothing then in the time. The people had lost everything, and it really described that the storms destroyed everything. The dust bowl was a series of dust storms that came across mostly Oklahoma. The storms destroyed everything it hit in its path.

The author was very descriptive in the writing. The reader can sit and visualize what the author is saying and trying to get you to see. He (the author) also says “cedar posts and collapsed homes” also gives you the feel of abandonment. The feeling of abandonment is depressing because its almost as if the people gave up on the land. The land was not suitable to live in due to the extreme winds and dust. Another reason to feel depressed is “greatest grasslands in the world was turned inside out” this shows that the storm turned everything to
