The word poetry is defined as literary work in which special is given to the expression of feelings and ideas. There are so many types of poetry such as; ballads, blank verse, limerick, etc. The poem “The Writer” by Richard Wilbur is free verse poem. The tone, theme, and voice throughout the poem displays different ways the poem can be viewed. Also he depicts different elements of poetry such as, metaphors, personification, similes, and more. In this poem Wilbur explores the idea of internal struggle and what never giving up is actually like. The son of a portrait painter, Richard Wilbur was born in New York City in 1921. In the first five stanzas of his poem, Wilbur describes a boat that is a metaphor for his daughter's life. The boat represents her imagination and problems she faces. The boat and daughter comparison is really creative in the sense because the boat is carrying cargo and so is the girl. The difference is that her cargo is much different. Hers is her imagination, problems, thoughts, and even her actions. The author says that this cargo is heavy, meaning that it is tough on his daughter. He is showing his love and care for his daughter by sympathizing and worrying for her and her mental health. This is related to the overall theme of love by showing that he is genuinely concerned for her troubles and cares for her dearly. The father tells her he hopes she has “lucky passages” just as the boat needs to have lucky passages so it does not sink and it stays afloat. The “chain” mentioned in the story is like an anchor on a boat in which it keeps the boat steady and afloat. The anchor in the poem could be the girl's father in which he cares for her and hopes she is successful.
