During my experience in providing support in and outside of the classroom, I noticed that reading and writing is a process that changes as students learn how to connect between spoken and written language. Therefore, finding many ways to help increase their knowledge and fundamental skills of literacy early on is very important. Also, planning, using developing resources, teaching role-playing, reading stories, word wall listing, and supporting instruction by using anchor charts, interacting with different strategies, along with media and technology helps students gain knowledge. Now, this is where the common term of, “Knowledge is Power,” come into play. The Writing Focus Model for Kindergarten and First Grade involves 6 writing components, pacing guide for writing, and literacy development models which includes emergent reading and writing skills. The Writer Workshop helps introduce and explain the processes. Coupled with, the design of the resource material detailed in the Comprehensive Reading Solutions or Striving Readers resources and Lucy Caulkin’s manual significantly enhance learning and literacy skills for all students. The beginning process or task involves engaging students in guided lessons of learning and teaching tools that begin in certain stages. Theses stages consist of spelling development and writing development. The stages of spelling development are identified as emergent spelling, letter name alphabetic spelling, and within-word pattern, spelling syllables, affixes spelling and derivational relations spelling.
