The novel, The Year of the Flood is the second novel of the Maddaddam Trilogy. The novel talks about the lives of two women named Toby and Ren who survive the waterless flood. The stories are narrated by these two characters. The novel also gives the details of the events that take place in the previous novel, Oryx and Crake. Other than the characters, Toby and Ren, the novel also talks about the religious cult who is called the God’s Gardeners. This religious group combines the ideas of biblical practices and beliefs

The characters in the novel sometimes, also intertwines with major characters from Oryx and Crake. The story is told through the flashbacks in majority. The story of Toby and Ren takes place differently with both the characters surviving the apocalypse in the different places. Each character reminisces about their time in the God's Gardeners religious group and the proceedings that show the way to their existing circumstances. A young woman, Toby, loses her parents under disastrous conditions due to the corporations and ends up working in a meat burger joint which is a shady place. Blanco, the psychopathic manager of the chain who sexually assaults women in his employ and has a reputation for killing women fixes his eyes on Toby and uses her for sexual needs whenever he likes. She is saved by Adam One, who is the leader of God’s Gardener and taken under his wings. Toby becomes a prominent part of the gardeners and meets Ren, a child member of the gardeners. Ren in due course grows up and turn into a trapeze dancer and a prostitute in the sex-club which is named as Scales and Tails. When the pandemic occurs, she happens to be locked in a bio-containment unit in the club. In the same way, a raid on the gardeners by Blanco and his bestial mates makes Toby to work in a spa and as a result is barricaded within a luxury spa where she
