Charlotte Perkins Gilman and Kate Chopin are two of the many famous short story writers. Charlotte Perkins is the author of “The Yellow Wallpaper”, which was written in 1899. “The Yellow Wallpaper” is a short story about a woman inclination into madness for postpartum depression while being treated by her husband, John while living in their summer mansion. While she was locked in the nursery upstairs her husband John worked as a doctor during the day, leaving her by herself all day. Being locked in the room she starts because very depressed and feels as if she has lost control of her life. All she wants is to escape and have her freedom back. She finds freedom through the yellow wallpaper. In “The Story of An Hour”, Mrs. Mallard wants to find freedom from her husband. When being told by her sister that her husband has died from a railroad accident she feels some sort of relief and comfort. She locks herself in her bedroom to think about her husband. She understands that know her husband is dead she is free. Louis sits in her chair by the window in her bedroom and whispers, “Free! Body and soul free!” (496). Her husband is now dead and is now joyful for her freedom. Even though she really loved her husband she is ecstatic to start her life over. Both stories, “The Yellow Wallpaper” and “The Story of an Hour”, have many things in common. They both talk about the woman who have became severely ill, their overpowered husbands, and trying to find their narrative and freedom.
