Henry Kohlmann Mrs. Kuhnen English Language Arts 9 January 2023 Definitely Not Normal Think of a time when you felt alone. Think of a time when you felt that no could help you. Thats what Adalina, a Malfetto, in the novel “The Young Elites” by Marie Lu feels when her entire world is turned upside down. She is forced to run away from home to avoid being sold to her fathers business partner. A prominent theme in the novel The Young Elites, by Marie Lu, is that having power in a corrupt society is more meaningful than in a law-abiding society. This theme shows itself in many ways throughout the novel with the growth of Adalina’s powers. The idea of power first emerges when Adalina finds out she is a Malfetto. But Adalina does not yet know what her powers are because she is holding them back so her mean and abusive father does not have access to them. This is shown when Adalina invisions her father speaking to her “Where are you going, Adalina? He’d say. There’s nothing out there for a girl like you”(Lu 12). This shows that Adalina is special because when her father refers to her as a girl with nothing to strive for. He is saying that people with powers, Malfettos, have no future in this world. This big idea comes out when Adalina is officially a member of the dagger society “Welcome to the dagger society. He smiles. White wolf”(Lu 226). This quote is significant because it shows how Adalina has finished her training and how she now knows how the control her power and she can now get revenge and those that have wronged her. I chose this quote to support my big idea because it shows how the growth of Adalina’s powers has ended and now she can control her powers. She will never be used
