The Zapata movement was caused due to people in Cuba being unhappy. They wanted change to occur. They demanded that there be free and democratic elections. The Zapatistas were a group who supported improving rights and living conditions for Mexico’s indigenous people. Even though their region, Chiapas, provided a lot of resources globally very little was provided to the indigenous people. They were so many poor people. The Zapatistas name themselves after Emiliano Zapata. Emiliano was a Mexican symbol that was known because of him working against a government that oppresses their own people. It was committed by the civil defense patrol from a neighboring village. At least 19 massacres occurred killing about five thousand people. In only 32 months about 15% of the entire population of the municipality had been killed. Two life changing events occurred in 1976. One was the Earthquake and the other was the Chixoy Hydroelectric Project. The beginning of the violence occurred when soldiers assigned to guard the Chixoy Hydroelectric Project. These 3 soldiers arrived to community Rio Negro right about the same time that people were in church talking about their plan to evict their land. That is when soldiers started shooting killing 7 people. Between 1980 and 1983 over 5,000 were killed. In 1982 another massacre happened, Killing 72 men and women. They were murdered by the Xoxoc Civil Defense Patrol. Many survivors of this terrifying event were very hurt. They were hurting because of the lose of their love one. They felt guilty that they were a part of this awful event. The government was very crafty in having the military put the indigenous communities against each other. The government was successful because many of the communities did the self-destruction. The government and military had control based on the fear of the survivors. In 1952 he overthrew the government. While he was president, The United States of America purchase more than half of Cuban sugar. The United States of America also took 90% of its utilities and telephones, 40% of its utilities and telephones and 50% of railroads. Most of their imports were from the United States. It seems as Bautista was only trying to keep the United States of America satisfied ignoring that their own people there were suffering from starvation. The July 26th movement occurred when Fidel Castro tried to overcome the Batista government. He led attacks on 2 army and ammunition. The attacked failed. He then was arrested with 68 of the attackers. They were tortured and executed. Fidel Castro was then arrested for 2 years. He then return and was able to obtain power. Cuba under Castro’s government became communist. Everything in Cuba was then property and own by the government. Castro took control by declaring everything was that once owned by Americans will now be owned by the Cuba government. An embargo was then established between Cuba and The United States of America. These two countries were then not allowed to trade with each other. This embargo has been around even till this day. Embargo and restriction of entering Cuba from the United States were talked about in class. Most people go to Mexico and from there to Cuba if they want to visit that country.
