World War 2 was know as the most brutal war in history. Families have been lost, innocent jews were killed or sent away to concentration camps and family having to move from one place to another to not get caught. But for Antonia, it was worse. In the “The Zookeeper’s Wife” by: Diane Ackerman, Antonia Zakinski has grew a family of her own during world War 2. She has to learn how to protect her family on her own when her husband went off to war and take care of her other family her zoo. For Antonia to maintain her family and the zoo was going to be a challenge she had to accept. Antonia had fear when she ,Jan(her husband) and Rys(her son) had to flee to another village due to a bomb heading towards the zoo. On page 46 it shows “Rys and his nanny safe in Rejentowaka, they decided to head first to the nearer village of Zalesi.” This shows how the family moved from the zoo to Rejentowka. As shown above, Antonia and Jan had to move their location to be closer with Rys , but also because of a bomb being near but,Antonia also feared that a bomb at the location she was going to, a bomb might land on them but Antonia had to keep that to herself. For Antonia and her family, there was a lot of risk that had to be taken in order for them to stay alive. Antonia and her husband had to take a risk by making a hard decision for Jan to join the army. Antonia also moves into her sister-in-law's house with Rys to get away from the zoo. Antonia is also worried about the zoo because on page 59 it says “Were they even alive, she wondered, and could the teenage boys left in charge really look after them?” This is showing how Antonia had to risk leaving her zoo in the hands of teenage boys.
