Chance for happiness is what everyone asks for. In these stories two guys put their life on the line for their first chance to be truly happy. Jeffrey wants to be with his one and only while Wesley Harris wants to be free. Wesley Harris and Jeffrey have many characteristics that are similar and some that are different that contribute to their stories. These two young men share similarities. To start off, they were slaves. I know this of the titles of the two passages. The first passage is named, “An account from the slave trade: Love story of Jeffrey and Dorcas.” The second passage is named, “Wesley Harris: An account of Escaping Slavery.” The titles of these passages lead me to know that they were slaves. According to, “An account from the slave trade: Love story of Jeffrey and Dorcas.” Jeffrey begged his new master to buy Dorcas. His life was on the line when he decided to speak to his master. He had to be exceedingly brave to do this. Jeffrey spoke to the master and gave him an abundance of reasons as to why he should buy Dorcas. Jeffrey tried his very hardest to try and be with Dorcas but sadly, there was a plot twist and Dorcas was to be sold his a family of 4 others. Jeffrey’s master decided to not buy Dorcas because he did not have a use for the others. Wesley was determined to escape from slavery. In, “Wesley Harris: An account of escaping slavery,” it says that when Wesley and the others that were escaping were hiding out in a barn, men came into the barn and discovered the boys. When the crew of men was trying to capture them, Wesley Harris fought back. Wesley was extremely brave when he decided to fight back. The passage says, “I at once shot him with my pistol, but in consequence of his throwing up his arm, which hit mine as I fired, the effect of the load of my pistol was much turned aside; his face however, was badly burned, besides his shoulder being wounded.” It also says, “I then drew a
