Who is the real monster? Is it a Frankenstein? Is it his creation, or his creation? Is it Janie, her grandmother, or the man in her life? In the book Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, the main character Victor creates this monster from his obsessive desire. In “Their Eyes Were Watching God” by Zora Neale Hurston, Janie, from a young age, was isolated because of the color of her skin. The rejection from society had a great impact on Frankenstein's monster. In both Janie and the creatures' case, society became the monster, by forcing them to be isolated, shaping them into who they would become. The most important Nanny wanted her to learn was to have a financially secure life after she died. This came from Nanny’s experience as a slave. She wanted a different life for Janie. However, throughout the novel it is portrayed that Janie wants to live for love, not security. Nanny shipped Janie off to her first husband, a wealthy older man. She was treated very well for the first year, but after that, her only use was to do manual labor. By doing this, Janie's wishes were left in the shadows. She got used to the orbit of following the norms and doing what she was told. After a bit she was tired of feeling used and left him for a man that had more potential to love her. Janie's second husband, Joe Starks, was ambitious and promised Janie a better life. As their marriage went on, his dominant and controlling nature became apparent. He viewed Janie as his possession, his trophy wife. He had no problem throwing her around or yelling at her in front of the townspeople.
