Before I partook in this discussion, I was confident in my abilities to discuss the various thematic topics that Hamlet covered as well as illustrate the intricate details of the play and connect it to a broader idea. However, I realized as the discussions progressed that I failed to consider all perspective and thought that my perspective was the correct and most accurate one. I am glad to have participated in the discussions because my understanding of the play has increased exponentially as I have been able to comprehend the timeless topics that Hamlet presents to the reader. One key subtopic that we covered under the umbrella of the main thematic topic of family was loyalty. We discussed whether or not various characters in the play were loyal to their family. Some ideas that were presented were focused on the justification of Hamlet’s lack of loyalty to his family. One individual explained to the audience and the rest of the panel that perspective must be considered before debating whether or not Hamlet was loyal to his family. They stated that if you consider Hamlet’s late father and his mother to be a part of his family, then it could be argued that he remained loyal to them as he strived to get his father revenge for his murder. However, if you consider Claudius and Ophelia to be the members of his family, then the argument could be made that he was not loyal and went against them to get his revenge.
