The Hunger Games Theme Analysis Have you ever thought about a whole continent that is under the control of one city, where people’s work isn’t appreciated, and where kids are chosen to be killed? Suzanne Collins’s action-packed book, The Hunger Games, gives us an insight into this and is full of emotion, dystopian governance, and blood. It shows us what society could become if we keep trending the way we are. The book takes place in dystopian North America and there are 12 districts where people work and live. She is so confident, she even dares to start thinking about what life will be like after the Games. The author writes, “Four of us left. For the first time, I allow myself to truly think about the possibility that I might make it home. To fame. To wealth. To my own house in the Victor’s Village. My mother and Prim would live there with me. No fear of hunger. A new kind of freedom” (Collins 310). This scene supports my claim because it shows Katniss having positive thoughts about the Games. She is having positive thoughts at the perfect time because there are only four people left, but she might be on the border of being blinded by confidence. In addition, she says that she lets herself think about winning which means she has confidence that it might happen. She said she will go back home to fame and wealth which makes her happy and excited to win the games. She is thinking too far ahead in life because she still needs to win the games and this shows that while our confidence can get better, humans don’t want to have too much confidence because it can cause trouble and can blind us from the tasks on hand. By using the word truly in that sentence, it means she is for real about getting home because she doesn’t seem like the character who would make bad predictions or guesses. People need to find that perfect balance of confidence. This is a good piece of evidence because the writing is very clear about what is in her mind and it gives us inside knowledge of her self-confidence.
