Theme in “King of the Bingo Game” In this short story we focus on the importance of the theme. The main character in this short story is in desperation to help a sick woman who he loves named Laura. Here is where we realizes the characters inability to control fate. While reading through this story the characters thoughts are very visible to us, he finally has a chance to win enough money to afford a doctor for Laura and he doesn’t want to lose that opportunity. Before the bingo game he wasn’t able to have a chance, so when he pressed the button he finally felt there was an opportunity for Laura to live. For once he felt in control. The way the narrator tells the story makes us realize how the bingo game controls all fate. As the narrator explains how the character feels and his thoughts he mentions how the audience made the character feel, “he felt that the whole audience has somehow entered him and was stomping it’s feet in his stomach and he was unable to throw them out” (589). The way both character and narrater portray their thoughts in this short story help support the topics of destiny and control. Their thoughts are based on the main characters ability to be able to control his destiny. A destiny to be able to have the control to help someone he loves. If we focus on the thoughts the narrater portrays through the story, we are able to understand how control and destiny where the characters opportunity. Both control and destiny are topics that help us with our own point of view of humanity, because like the character in the story, we all look for control to be able to make our own destiny.
