The most dangerous game was written by Richard Connell in 1924. It is a short story which has mystery, suspense and adventure. Also, it shows how people do their best to survive in different situations. This story consists of two main characters, Sanger Rainsford and General Zaroff. The story begins on a yacht in the Caribbean Sea.
In his short story “The Most Dangerous Game,” author Richard Connell shows his mastery of the craft of storytelling by his skillful use of a number of literary elements in the creation of his tale. Connell makes excellent use of Plot and Setting by creating a great deal of suspense in the mood he sets. He also surprises readers with a stunning climax and intense falling action to close out his story. He next develops narrators in the story using Narrator and Voice. Connell uses a third person limited narrator to emphasize his mysterious tone in this story.

In 1924, Connell created the main characters Sanger Rainsford and General Zaroff. The two of them love to hunt, but the prey is bilaterality different things. General Zaroff and Sanger Rainsford share the same circumstance of hunting but perceive it differently because of their upbringing, morals values and military background.

Initially, there is admiration between both characters, because Rainsford is Zaroff’s hero and Rainsford is grateful for Zaroff being welcome to him. However.
In the story The Most Dangerous Game, Richard Connell reveals a man named Rainsford, who is stuck on an island after falling off a yacht. Richard Connell uses imagery and events to create a feeling of suspense throughout the story, this in turn creates feelings of fear and danger. As the story starts, Connell uses dialogue to let the reader know what the setting is like on the yacht. While Rainsford and his friend Whitney are standing on the yacht, Rainsford states, “It’s like moist black velvet”.

Connell effectively uses a motif to create a unified effect of tension and fear in “The Most Dangerous Game.” According to the text, motif is when a space, object, image or idea recurs throughout a work of literature (Novelguide.com). Throughout the story, Sanger Rainsford and General Zaroff are on an ongoing hunt for each other. The motif of hunting is repeated multiple times from the beginning to the end of the story. For example, Rainsford says, “Hunting is the best sport in the world, I always say” (Connell 2).
Fear is not real. It is the product of thoughts you create. Danger is very real, but fear is a choice. In the short story “The Most Dangerous Game” the main character Rainsford is being hunted which creates fear in him. He is scared of dying but overcame his fear by facing the danger of the hunting game.
The personalities of the the protagonist and antagonist play an instrumental role in the overall meaning of the story. Theme also plays a role in the overall meaning of the story. Although one could find many different themes within The most dangerous game, but the theme of covered in this essay is that survival is of those who are smart, cunning, and can adapt to many different environments. This can be applied to many different species within the world.
“The Most Dangerous Game” shows how wealth and power can change people as well as starting the downfall of civilization. General Zaroff, is a wealthy, strong man. What he does with his wealth is unheard of though. Zaroff posits that because he is strong and rich, he can do whatever he wants. The thing he wants to do the most, kill humans.
In Richard Connell’s short story “The Most Dangerous Game” the setting has a significant effect on the story. By utilizing the island as the main setting, Connell forms the story and helps create character development as it goes on. If the story was set anywhere else, it would be a different story. Through using this specific setting, Connell is able to create and form the plot.
