Life maybe for the strong, but it can also be for the clever. Originator of the short story, “The Most Dangerous Game,” is Richard Connell. In 1924, Connell created the main characters Sanger Rainsford and General Zaroff. The two of them love to hunt, but the prey is bilaterality different things. General Zaroff and Sanger Rainsford share the same circumstance of hunting but perceive it differently because of their upbringing, morals values and military background.
Connell uses imagery to show the reader how intense and fearful Rainsford feels in the story. For instance, Zaroff first look to Rainsford was “menacing look” (17) This quote is imagery because it describing the look in his eyes did not change and it was a menacing look also. Another example for imagery would be when “Ivan conducted him was in many ways remarkable.”
General Zaroff is different, to say the least, in Richard Connell’s book, “The Most Dangerous Game.” Rainsford is stranded on a deserted island, or so he thinks. Rainsford comes upon a mansion that is owned by General Zaroff. He knows of Rainsford, who is a renowned author of a book about the hunt, as well as everything and everywhere Rainsford has hunted. General Zaroff is also a hunter, but he goes to the extreme.

Rainsford is initially shown to not show any empathy to the wild animals he hunts. Zaroff is no different, with him declaring, “I hunt the scum of the earth: sailors from tramp ships--lassars, blacks, Chinese, whites, mongrels,” (9). Zaroff hunts humans who have the unfortunate luck to arrive on Ship-Trap Island. Zaroff gives no second thought about hunting humans because he finds them to be the perfect sport to hunt, and finds pleasure in hunting them. For example, after Rainsford, the main character, fell off the boat, the author wrote: “The light of the yacht became faint and ever-vanishing fireflies (page 63)” This certain description sets up the mood of the description, both desperation and hopelessness and presents it to the audience. While Rainsford and his friend Whitney are standing on the yacht, Rainsford states, “It’s like moist black velvet”.
All throughout the world today crime spreads but more specifically,murder. The number of deaths by murder increase every single year. For example, the FBI has stated that from 2015 to 2016 murder increased by 1.9 percent. Just like in Richard connell's story “The Most Dangerous game,” where One of the main characters, General Zaroff, kills more and more people as each day breaks dawn. The Everyone in this gruesome world should have more hope and trust in themselves that the numbers with decrease in the near coming future.
Connell effectively uses a motif to create a unified effect of tension and fear in “The Most Dangerous Game.” According to the text, motif is when a space, object, image or idea recurs throughout a work of literature (Novelguide.com). Throughout the story, Sanger Rainsford and General Zaroff are on an ongoing hunt for each other. The motif of hunting is repeated multiple times from the beginning to the end of the story. For example, Rainsford says, “Hunting is the best sport in the world, I always say” (Connell 2).
Fear is not real. It is the product of thoughts you create. Danger is very real, but fear is a choice. In the short story “The Most Dangerous Game” the main character Rainsford is being hunted which creates fear in him. He is scared of dying but overcame his fear by facing the danger of the hunting game.
In Richard Connell’s short story “The Most Dangerous Game” the setting has a significant effect on the story. By utilizing the island as the main setting, Connell forms the story and helps create character development as it goes on. If the story was set anywhere else, it would be a different story. Through using this specific setting, Connell is able to create and form the plot.
The setting is extremely essential to the plot of Richard Connell’s short story “The Most Dangerous Game” for two main reasons. For instance, when Rainsford is swimming to the island he notices that there are large rocks surrounding it: “ Jagged crags appeared to jut up into the opaqueness;”(3). Since there are large jagged rocks surrounding “ Ship Trap” island sailors would typically not dare go near them. If these rocks were not surrounding the island onlookers would see men being killed, not dock and General Zaroff would have no game to hunt. People would see the general’s cruel hunting game and report it to the authorities.
