In the short story “A Brief Moment in the Life of Angus Bethune” by Chris Crutcher. My theme for this short story is when one pushes through the bad stuff, the end is much more rewarding. At the beginning of the story Angus was a really negative person thinking that nothing could ever work out for him. For example when Angus was talking too the readers at the beginning of the story saying, “you don't survive a genetic history like that unscathed. ”(Pg.1)

The society in this book is basically the epitome of a dystopia. It has a totalitarian government and everything about the world the people live in is a frightening nightmare. The government has completely dehumanized the way people live their lives. People in this dystopia aren’t even actually human any more. They aren’t even born the natural way through reproduction, they are created.
We often encourage people to actively pursue their happiness while also wanting to discourage them to escape from reality. However, avoiding your issues is also a way of pursuing happiness, even though this route will prove to be temporary. In the literary piece, “Horses of the Night” by Margaret Laurence, the author describes the story of a boy named Chris, who, due to his financial conditions, is forced to move from his home in Shallow Creek to dwell in Manawaka, in order to attend high school. Chris’ character is used to demonstrate the idea that individuals may escape from the miserable aspects of their lives in order to stay happy. Through the course of this work, you witness the changes Chris undergoes, through the eyes of his six-year-old cousin Vanessa, which ultimately lead to his downfall.

Growing up requires a high demand of endurance as life is filled with hardships and challenges. Thus in order to live through them, people must be as strong as the stress and anxiety which builds upon them. Both Donald M. Murray’s “What Football Taught Me” and Lisa Keiski’s “Suicide’s Forgotten Victims” demonstrate how to persist life challenges. Despite experiencing different forms of hardships that enable them to survive through their pain, Murray and Keiski transmit life lessons about individual growth. They emphasize survival through society, authority figures, and themselves.
Life can be difficult, and people every day have to endure their own type of adversity, but adversity isn’t limited to just one problem but an array of difficulties. These problems can appear from many factors may it be a physical, mental, or social situation. The problems of adversity can be seen in the book The Other Wes Moore, as throughout the book, both of the Moore’s have faced different problems, with one overcoming, and the other being stuck with obstacles. When anyone is in the face of adversity, being guided to overcome will lead to success, while the less guided will lead to more stresses. Any type of adversity can emerge at any time, but the best way to overcome it is to find guidance.

Essential to overcoming adversity is the ability to cause change in yourself and others. In the book, Boy on the Wooden Box, by Marilyn J. Harran and Elisabeth B.Leyson, Leon has to learn that he can’t just wait for his problems to go away and not do anything, to overcome his adversity he needs to work hard, not lose hope, and stay determined. This helps him to survive the Nazi oppression because he never gave up so he kept striving forward. Ultimately, Harran and Leyson show us that hope, hard work, and determination can give you the strength to accomplish your goals.. Being scared and weak can help you understand to not take life for granted.
Unequal Childhoods is an ethnography outlining the study done by Annette Lareau which researched how socioeconomic classes impact parenting among both white and African American families. She used both participant observation and interviewing. 12 families participated in this study where she came to conclusions on whether they displayed parenting styles of concerted cultivation or natural growth based of their socioeconomic status. Concerted cultivation is a parenting style where the parent(s) are fully invested in creating as much opportunity for their child as possible, but results in a child with a sense of entitlement. An example of this would be a parent who places their children in a wide array of extracurricular activities and/or actively speaks to educators about the accommodations their child needs to effectively learn.

Well my thesis is that when Robert frost says nothing gold can stay he means that childhood views are going to disappear with hate and the never stopping search for money and power. And I think this because children see magic in everything but adults have a hard time doing so and this heavily ties in with the stories main plot and characters. Now later on in this writing I will be giving great documentation of pony two bit Johnny dally darry and soda tying into this idea of mine. And I think a lot of people agree with me on my idea of how this ties in with childhood.
Adversity can take us by surprise, but everyone at some point in life experiences it. The way our personal identity can be shaped is through our phases of adversity. The experiences of dealing with difficulties can shape the way we view life and the actions that will show our persona. When we persevere adversity and obstacles it shows our reputation and our true type of identity. In the play Hamlet, William Shakespeare, illustrates the way Hamlet, as well as other characters, deal with adversity through the types of motives they are seeking.
As humans, people will face many difficulties throughout their life. In the science fiction novel, Ender’s Game, written by Orson Scott Card, the main character, Ender Wiggin, faces complications when he is selected to go to Battle School for training. Many of these hardships are caused by deep affection while other troubles are created because of his separation from the other students at school. However, these obstacles do improve Ender mentally, and it is depicted that these bumps in the road strengthen the protagonist physically in the long run, too. Throughout the book, Card uses love and isolation to demonstrate that life struggles are beneficial to a person’s life which creates a unique and relatable reading experience.
My story of my childhood is not to get pity from anybody; my story is empowering! The struggle and the hard times of my childhood gave me the desire for more. My mother inspired me to fight for what I want, to struggle for what I need, to dream for tomorrow because it just might be a little brighter than today and to make the not so bright days’ worth
