How Censorship May Lead to a Dystopian Reality
How important are books to modern society and how would society live without them? Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 explores a dystopian society without the presence of books. In the novel, books are banned and if found, burned by the United States government because they allowed the population to think critically, generate controversial ideas, and question governmental authority (Bradbury). Moreover, the government was able to maintain social order by using propaganda to control how citizens lived and felt at all times and significantly reducing the quality of education. AP Africana Studies is a college-level course offered to high school students with an emphasis on race theory, the history of slavery, African American culture, and civil rights. The course was designed to allow the students to think critically, analyze sources from different perspectives, and generate arguments or opinions. With the crackdown of the class, many students will not be able to obtain these skills, which are often used in higher education or personal political life. Furthermore, classic English literature such as To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Gender Queer by Maia Kobabe, and Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck are banned in public school libraries or prohibited for classroom instruction because they were deemed too sexually explicit, obtain explicit language, or discuss racial inequalities. The Child Protection in Public Schools is a bill proposed by the Florida state senate prohibiting the use of pronouns that do not correspond to a person’s legal sex, forbidding the discussion of sexual orientation or gender identity for grades K-9, and strictly teaching the benefits of a monogamous heterosexual relationship (Florida Senate). For students who identify as transgender or gender nonconforming, they will not be allowed to be referred to by their preferred respective pronouns. The prohibition of pronoun use can be considered as disrespectful or an act of degradation towards gender identity. The lack of education on homosexual sexual orientation may lead to higher rates of sexually transmitted diseases or HIV because students were uneducated on the practice of safe intercourse or safe homosexual relationships. Moreover, children who question their gender identity or sexual orientation will not be allowed to seek advice from teachers or school counselors, causing identity confusion and a lack of resources that may not be available at home. Books and classroom topics that highlight gender identity or homosexual orientation provide a sense of comfort to those who do not fit the cisgender or heterosexual norm.
